Christina Aguilera made an astonishing gaffe by botching the lyrics to the American National Anthem as she kicked off the Super Bowl on Sunday night.

The 30-year-old singer performed a throaty rendition of The Star-Spangled Banner to open the NFL championship - but sang incorrect lyrics that matched an error from Wikipedia.

What she should have sung in the middle of the song was: 'Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight, O'er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming.'

That error matches one that used to exist on the Wikipedia entry for the Star Spangled Banner Lyrics.

Wikipedia is a user-generated online encyclopaedia that depends on the community for accuracy.

Viewers at home were quick to take to Twitter to point out Aguilera's slip-up.

Meanwhile, the fans had a a ball at the Super Bowl, where the Packers beat the Steelers, dressing up in all sorts of wacky outfits as they forgot the snow and freezing fog to have a super time.

They poured into Dallas to watch the biggest sporting event in the American calendar - as welcome sun melted much of the ice and celebrities turned Dallas into party central.

The favoured Packers managed to overcame key injuries, beating the Steelers 31-25. They were only the second number six seed to win the championship. Coincidentally, the 2005 Steelers were the other.

Photographer Win McNamee's shoulder was broken in four places by the falling ice. He told the Dallas Morning News: 'Honestly, while it was hitting me, I was thinking I'm going to die here. It was pretty frightening.
